"So with a bit of searching I finally found a place to recover the data off my old defunct laptop. The company is Computer Care (http://www.computercare.org), and they're located out in Colchester. Their service was personable and reasonably priced - they charged $100 for the data recovery which is a fair price by industry standard. They didn't charge me for the hard drive that they weren't able to access. Ron even arranged with me to pick it up from me and drop it off to me. He really seemed to take pride in his work.
